Most streamed movie of the past five years revealed

“See the line where the sky meets the sea? it calls me / And no one knows how far it goes…” It goes straight to the top of the streaming podium, that’s where.

Moana 2 is currently in theatres and making some big waves at the box office.
In the US, the sequel to Disney’s 2016 animated musical adventure, starring Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson, surpassed the opening of last year’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie and has blown all predictions out of the water.
Its five-day opening has set a new record for Thanksgiving moviegoing, with $221 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates – and an added $165.3 million internationally.
The previous best was $125 million for Frozen 2 in its second week of release in 2019.
Now, a new statistic has been revealed, showing that audiences can’t get enough of Moana.
Eight years after its release, the original movie is the most-streamed movie of the past five years, according to Nielsen data as seen by The Wall Street Journal – and not just on Disney+ alone.
Moana has been viewed for a total of more than 1 billion hours – which amounts to one person sitting through the movie 775 million times. Or, as The Wall Street Journal puts it, “watching Moana for 150,000 years straight”.
The publication compared that to other Disney hits like Encanto, which has had 37.1 billion minutes streamed, and Frozen 2, which has been watched for 30.7 billion minutes. The original Moana comes in higher at 44.8 billion.
Let’s let that sink in. That means that between 2020 and 2024, Moana has been watched via streaming services for 44.8 billion minutes, making it the most streamed last year and over the past five years combined.
“A movie that came out that many years before suddenly popping – I mean, obviously it’s unprecedented,” said Jared Bush, the chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios.
So, congrats to Moana, brace yourself for a third instalment (even if the second chapter falls way short of the first) and #JusticeForRatatouille, anyone?
Let’s make it happen, streamers.
